Wrong-Way Accident Sends 4 To The Hospital
Posted on July 1, 2014
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says that a drunk driver in west Tulsa struck an SUV carrying a mother and her two children on June 23. The accident occurred a little before 11:00 p.m. at 33rd West Avenue on Interstate 244. Tulsa County Sheriff’s deputies say that they had first seen the intoxicated driver going the wrong way on the Broken Arrow Expressway, and the deputies followed the woman with their sirens blaring; the driver allegedly failed to stop for the officers.
The driver then allegedly continued going west in the eastbound lanes of I-244. According to deputies, the woman nearly hit several other vehicles before her Honda crashed into the Ford SUV. EMSA transported the three injured occupants of the SUV and the 25-year-old driver of the Honda to a Tulsa-area hospital. After the driver was treated for her injuries, she was placed under arrest.
The woman was booked into jail on suspicion of DUI, DUI while causing a collision, traveling in the wrong direction and attempting to escape from police officers. Troopers said that the driver admitted to having taken Xanax and drinking rum earlier that day. The woman’s bond was set at $1,600, and she was arraigned the day following the accident. The medical conditions of the mother and her children were not reported as of the day following the crash.
Drunk drivers may face greater criminal penalties when they cause an accident while driving under the influence, but they may also be ordered to pay damages to the accident victims if the victims file a personal injury lawsuit against the driver. A personal injury attorney may consult with accident victims to help them determine what compensation they may be entitled to, and an attorney may also speak with witnesses and determine who they may be able to bring in to testify if necessary.
