One motorcycle rider was killed and 13 more were injured in a multi-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 81 on April 11. Authorities said the accident happened at approximately 11:30 a.m. north of Comanche.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, a group of motorcyclists was headed south on Highway 81 when a pickup truck coming in the other direction crossed the center line while rounding a curve and smashed into five of the motorcycles, which caused a pileup of 13 bikes. One motorcycle rider, a 53-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Five other riders were airlifted to Oklahoma University Medical Center in Oklahoma City with various injuries. The hospital later said one rider was in critical condition, one was in fair condition and three were in serious condition. Four more victims were taken by ambulance to Duncan Regional Hospital where they were treated and released.

The motorcyclists were reportedly headed to Waurika to attend the Rattle Snake Hunt. Troopers said they did not yet know what caused the pickup truck to cross into oncoming traffic. The accident remains under investigation.

A motorcycle collision like this one is often caused by a negligent or impaired driver. Any motorcyclist who has suffered serious injuries due to the actions of another party may wish to speak with a lawyer. In some cases, a personal injury lawsuit could be maintained against the at-fault driver seeking such damages as the costs of medical care and compensation for lost wages. Likewise, the next of kin of a motorcyclist killed by such a negligent or impaired driver could file a wrongful death lawsuit seeking funeral and burial costs as well as other damages permitted by statute.
