Oklahoma Man Killed in Head-On Car Accident

Posted on May 19, 2015

When Oklahoma residents get into their cars and travel on the state’s roadways, none of them has a guarantee of arriving at their destinations safely. All they can do is operate their own vehicle with caution and rely on the other drivers to pay attention and follow the rules of the road. Unfortunately, that does not always happen, and the result could be a deadly or serious car accident.

An 80-year-old man and his 76-year-old passenger likely had no idea that their trip would end in tragedy. It was a Sunday morning and they would soon have a life altering — and life-ending — encounter with a 49-year-old man driving a pickup truck. As the pickup approached the couple’s vehicle from the opposite direction, it veered into the path of their vehicle and slammed into it head-on.

The elderly Oklahoma man died at the scene of the accident. His passenger suffered serious enough injuries that emergency medical personnel felt it necessary to have her flown from Lexington to OU Medical Center. The pickup truck driver suffered minor injuries for which he was released after treatment. Authorities did not indicate whether charges might be filed against the driver believed to have been at fault for the crash.

The family of the deceased man and the injured woman may file civil actions against the driver of the pickup for wrongful death and personal injury even if he does not face criminal charges in connection with the car accident. Successfully establishing that the negligent actions of the party deemed responsible for the crash caused or contributed to the death of the driver and the injuries suffered by the passenger could result in an award of damages. Any monetary compensation received could help defray the financial burdens placed on the victims and their families.
