The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is still attempting to ascertain why a car was heading south in the northbound lanes of Highway 75 recently. In fact, investigators are asking that anyone who may have witnessed the events leading up to the fatal accident to contact them. The accident took place at approximately 3 a.m. on July 25.
A motorcycle rider and his passenger were traveling in the northbound lane and had no idea that a car was heading right for them from the opposite direction. The car crashed into the motorcycle. During the impact, the 22-year-old woman in the car was ejected and suffered extensive injuries to which she succumbed at the scene.
She was not the only fatality, however. The driver and passenger on the motorcycle also died from the injuries they suffered in the crash. The two men in the car survived.
One man, age 21, was taken to the hospital where he was treated for his injuries and has since been released. The other man, age 22, suffered severe injuries and, at last report, remained hospitalized in critical condition. Investigators did not reveal who was driving the car at the time of the accident.
If one of the men was the driver of the car, he could face criminal charges and likely civil actions from the families of the deceased victims and the injured survivor. If the woman was driving, no criminal charges would be filed, but civil actions could be filed against her estate. Proving negligence is required before an Oklahoma court will consider any request for damages. If it is established that the deaths and injuries were due to the negligence of the driver, then damages may be awarded that could defray the financial losses incurred in the aftermath of this fatal accident.
