Many Oklahoma motorcyclists are seriously injured or killed each year in vehicle collisions. A great number of fatalities in Oklahoma occur when motorcyclists do not wear a helmet. In 2012, for example, out of 84 motorcyclists in Oklahoma that died as a result of a collision, 77 percent were unhelmeted at the time.

Nationally, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that 4,957 motorcyclists were killed in 2012. In addition, 93,000 more motorcyclists were injured during the year. Even though motorcycles accounted for only three percent of all registered vehicles and only .7 percent of vehicle miles traveled, motorcyclists were 26 times more likely to be involved in a fatal collision than were occupants of other types of passenger vehicles. Additionally, motorcyclists were five times more likely to be injured in a collision.

Out of the 2,317 fatal crasheses involving a motorcycle and another vehicle, 41 percent involved a left-turning vehicle and a motorcyclist who was driving straight. Some of these occurred when a motorcyclist was passing while others occurred while the motorcyclist was oncoming.

When a motorcyclist is seriously injured or killed in a wreck caused by an inattentive driver, the injured motorcyclist or his or her loved ones may be able to hold the negligent driver liable by filing a personal injury or wrongful death claim against them. Many vehicle drivers fail to carefully observe traffic and fail to notice motorcyclists. When they then cause a collision, they could be expected to pay for all of the economic and noneconomic losses suffered by the motorcyclist or his or her family as a result. Victims and families may thus wish to consult with a personal injury attorney about the facts of their case.
