Fatal Accident in Oklahoma’s Capitol Leads to Driver’s Arrest

At approximately 7:40 p.m. on Sept. 29, emergency personnel were dispatched to a crash at a busy intersection in Oklahoma’s capitol. When they arrived, they discovered that a single vehicle had been involved in what ultimately became a fatal accident. By the time the scene was cleared, the driver was in police custody.

Preliminary reports indicate that the man lost control of the vehicle, which caused it to flip. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered a 25-year-old man who admitted to being the driver of the vehicle. During questioning, officers allegedly smelled alcohol on the man and suspected that driving under the influence and speed were the factors that contributed to the crash. The driver was taken into custody and then to the hospital in order to obtain a blood sample for analysis. It was also determined that he was driving without a valid license.

Oklahoma City police officers also discovered that a passenger was in the vehicle at the time of the crash. He was rushed to a hospital in the area suffering from a traumatic brain injury. Just 13 short hours later, he was dead. The driver faces charges of murder in the second-degree, among others.

He may also face a wrongful death claim from the family of the passenger who died in this fatal accident. If prosecutors secure a conviction on the murder charge, it may be used to help the family establish that the driver’s actions led to the death of their loved one. Successfully proving negligence could result in the court awarding damages to the family that might help alleviate the financial burdens the crash thrust upon them.
