Drunk Driving Especially Problematic During Holiday Season

Posted on December 3, 2014

Many Oklahoma residents are seriously injured or killed as a result of car accidents caused by drunk drivers each year. The holiday season is an especially dangerous time as people leave celebrations and get behind the wheel of their vehicles despite being under the influence of alcohol.

In 2013, approximately 2,700 people in Oklahoma were killed or injured in drunk driving accidents, according to sources. During the 2013 Thanksgiving weekend, half of the fatal crashes occurred as a result of the consumption of alcohol. In order to reduce the number of alcohol-related accidents during the holidays, several services offer alternatives to driving home drunk such as AAA Oklahoma’s Tipsy Tow.

Despite the availability of free services, people continue to get behind the wheel of a vehicle while intoxicated. Altogether, 2013 resulted in 3,824 traffic accidents that were alcohol-related in the state. Moreover, reports revealed that the costs of being criminally prosecuted for driving under the influence are high; a person convicted of DUI for the first time could pay up to $10,000 in fines as well as have his or her auto insurance increase by 30 percent.

In addition to criminal penalties, people who seriously injure others in a drunk driving accident may be held liable in a civil suit as well. A victim might be able to file a personal injury suit in order to recover compensation for the economic and noneconomic losses they suffered as a result of the driver’s negligence. An attorney might help an injured victim by filing the appropriate documents and negotiating with insurance companies.
