Driver Cited for Improper U-turn in Fatal Car Accident

The driver of an SUV heading west on Highway 60 was recently cited by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol for improperly making a U-turn that caused a three-vehicle crash. Troopers say that as the driver believed responsible for the fatal car accident began his illegal turn, a westbound pickup truck traveling behind the SUV crashed into the back of it. The impact sent the SUV into the oncoming lane where it plowed head-on into an eastbound car.

The 86-year-old driver and his 79-year-old passenger were trapped in the wreckage of their vehicle. Once freed, both were transported to a hospital in the area. The passenger succumbed to her injuries there, and the driver was transferred to a Tulsa hospital for further treatment. At last report, his condition was still considered critical.

The 41-year-old driver and 34-year-old passenger of the SUV are both considered to be in stable condition at a hospital. A 22-year-old passenger in the pickup truck is also in stable condition. The 24-year-old pickup driver was also injured, but was released after treatment. Fortunately, three minor children in the pickup reportedly did not suffer any injuries.

All of the victims — and the families of the deceased passenger — may not yet be thinking about the financial losses this fatal car accident is causing. At some point, however, those losses could become overwhelming. Wrongful death and personal injury claims may be filed in an attempt to receive court-ordered restitution for those losses. Proving that the injuries suffered — fatal or otherwise — were caused by the negligence of another party or parties could lead an Oklahoma court to award damages to help with the financial burdens incurred in this crash.
