Many Oklahoma residents are injured in car accidents each year, and the problem is not one that is just relegated to the state. According to recently released data, 2.5 million Americans went to the hospital after suffering car accident injuries in 2012 alone, which means almost 7,000 people were injured every day.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the lifetime costs of providing medical treatment for treatment of those injuries was $18 million, including the costs of hospitalization and treatment. Most of those who received car accident injury treatment were either young people or those who were elderly and over the age of 80.
In that same year, 33,000 people were killed in motor vehicle collisions, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Motor vehicle collisions are the single largest cause of personal injuries suffered in the United States, while the main causes of fatal accidents are drunk driving, distracted driving, reckless driving and speeding. Drowsy driving has also been identified as a major cause of motor vehcilce accidents, as illustrated by the truck accident which injured actor Tracy Morgan last summer.
Impaired or distracted driving may result in a motor vehicle accident that can leave victims with serious and catastrophic injuries. Those who are injured in an accident caused by the negligence of another driver may be left reeling beneath the weight of substantial losses and expenses. They often will seek the assistance of an attorney in filing a personal injury lawsuit against the responsible party. Through a lawsuit, injured plaintiffs may seek to recover damages that can include the cost of required medical care and treatment as well as the recovery of lost wages where appropriate.
