Car Accidents Are Leading Cause of Whiplash Injuries

With the crashes experienced on Oklahoma roads every year, a portion of the people involved will experience whiplash injuries. Whiplash is the term for a sprain or strain of the soft tissues of the neck that sometimes affects the vertebrae.

The American Chiropractic Association cites motor vehicle accidents as the most common cause of whiplash. The impact of the vehicles in a crash jolts the passengers, and this can sometimes make a person’s head whip forward and back. The resulting hyperextension of the neck can tear ligaments and strain muscles and tendons. A herniation of the discs between the vertebrae is also possible. Inflammation of nerves between the vertebrae has also been observed.

A car accident in which one vehicle rear-ends another vehicle is especially likely to produce a whiplash injury. It is important to know that crashes do not have to be at high speeds to hurt the neck. Even low-speed impacts, like one in a parking lot for example, could cause whiplash as long as the jolt is sudden and the passenger’s head flops back and forth quickly.

People who experience whiplash might not feel symptoms for several hours or even days after the accident. When pain, stiffness, headaches, sore throat or other whiplash symptoms occur, treatment is important. Ignoring the injury has been known to leave the person with long-term pain.

A car-accident victim whose neck pain does not develop the day of the crash may discover later that medical treatment is needed. To recover medical expenses and compensation for lost income, a person in that situation may choose to work with an attorney to make a personal injury claim. This might be a viable option if the other driver’s negligence caused the accident.
