Alleged Drunk Driver Taken into Custody at Movie Theater

Posted on August 14, 2014

A 33-year-old man has been charged criminally in Oklahoma City after hitting multiple vehicles at a local drive-in movie theater. The incident occurred in the 6000 block of South Western Avenue at approximately 1:15 a.m. while moviegoers were leaving the premises. According to a witness at the scene, the man drove his car into multiple vehicles in the theater’s lot. Police reported that several people were restraining the man when officers arrived at the scene because he had attempted to leave. An occupant of one of the vehicles he ran into was hospitalized with a neck injury.

The man reportedly told responding officers that his brakes had stopped working, but they allegedly overheard him ask his girlfriend if the vehicle would stop if he stepped on the gas pedal. According to police, he also requested that she throw an alcohol bottle over a fence.

According to police, the man smelled of alcohol and failed a field sobriety test. He also reportedly had trouble standing and slurred his words while speaking. A check for outstanding warrants revealed one from another county for failing to pay a fine associated with having left the scene of an accident. The driver was taken into custody and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol with injury accident.

Drinking and driving is against the law, and hurting another individual because of such negligent behavior may result in criminal charges. A driver may be held responsible for such actions in civil court as well. Someone injured in a drunk driving accident may face long term medical care and physical rehabilitation due to their injuries. If retained for a personal injury suit, an attorney would likely begin gathering evidence against the case’s defendant by reviewing the incident’s police report and any available witness statements.
