Accident in Oklahoma Kills LDS Church Missionary

Posted on August 27, 2014

A 19-year-old woman from Utah who was serving as a missionary with the LDS Church has died from injuries she sustained in an automobile accident in Tulsa. The accident happened on Aug. 22 and involved three vehicles including the van the woman was riding in along with several other missionaries.

According to state troopers, the driver of the van missed an exit on the Muskogee Turnpike and then attempted to make an illegal U-turn. The turn caused a chain-reaction accident when a tractor-trailer tried to slow down to avoid the van and was struck from behind by a hospital bus. The 19-year-old woman was ejected from the van after it was hit by the tractor-trailer.

According to a statement issued by an LDS Church spokeswoman, the injured woman was in critical condition and on life support the night of the crash. The following day, a statement was issued by the woman’s family through an LDS bishop which indicated that the woman had died. Two other male missionaries, ages 18 and 19, reportedly suffered less severe injuries in the crash. The church spokeswoman’s report indicated that there had been a total of five people in the van when the crash happened.

When someone is killed in a car or truck accident caused by driver error, family members of the deceased may be eligible for compensation in a civil suit. An attorney may be able to work with the family to initiate a wrongful death claim. Rewarded compensation may cover various expenses that occurred as a result of the crash, including hospital bills and funeral expenses.
